Along with Brad, I'm proud of our new website and believe this is going to help us engage with our patients and the community better than ever. As I look around these days (even in our own reception room!) I see almost everybody looking at a screen. Smartphones, tablets...these are the devices people use to learn about things and keep in touch, and we're excited about expanding our ability to connect in this increasingly digital world.
Two things I've been passionate about for a long time: healthy food and yoga. Your diet, lifestyle and personal fitness habits are a huge influence on your general health. When you come in to see me, I always try to get "the big picture" about you, so that I can better understand what's going to be the best treatment for you. I recommend yoga to anyone who's fit enough to practice it (and that's just about anyone) because it's a great low-impact way to maintain your flexibility and get some significant stress relief, two things we can all use. If you're interested, ask me about classes when you're in for your next appointment or use the contact form on our website to get in touch and I'll give you some pointers. Yoga is also good for rehabilitation from many injuries, but the important thing is to be sure you get good instruction and guidance and then don't overdo it. There can be too much of a good thing. By the way, I'm honored to have been named "Yogi of the Month" for October at Santa Barbara's Bikram Yoga Center. If you want to try a little yoga, or take some advanced classes, Bikram will be happy to help you out. Tell them Bruce sent you!
Now, how about some healthy eating ideas? Fall days are officially here and we'll have cooler weather soon. Here's a link to the recipe for one of my favorite vegan comfort food dishes, Pumpkin Corn Chowder. It's easy to make and you can freeze the leftovers to have some other time. Feel free to experiment and customize it with other ingredients and let me know if you find something that's tasty.
A final thought for this issue: with your kids going back to school and possibly getting into team sports again, take a few minutes to make sure everybody understands the importance of wearing the appropriate safety gear for the sport as well as training properly before jumping back in. Many sports injuries happen as kids begin a new sport or resume doing something they were well-conditioned for last spring, but might not be tuned up for here at the end of summer vacation. As with everything about your health and well being, if you have questions or need information, let me hear from you. I enjoy knowing that I'm doing more than just giving you an adjustment when you come in to the clinic. Wellness is something we all need to focus on every day.
Have a great autumn and enjoy our beautiful Central Coast weather!
